Exploring Patient Adherence, Adverse Events, and Treatment Effectiveness in Care Plans

Objective:

This lab is designed to help students understand the critical factors influencing a patient’s healthcare journey, including medication adherence, adverse event reporting, and treatment effectiveness. Using the CareAssist Playground, students will simulate different patient journeys by modifying adherence levels, documenting adverse events, and analyzing treatment outcomes. By creating and evaluating various journey scenarios, students will gain insights into how these factors affect overall patient engagement, clinical outcomes, and care plan success.

Lab Overview

  1. Introduction to Patient Journey Mapping:

    • Understand the concept of a patient journey and its role in personalized care.

    • Learn the importance of adherence, adverse event reporting, and treatment effectiveness in shaping the journey.

  2. Overview of the CareAssist Playground:

    • Familiarize yourself with the CareAssist Playground interface and its features.

    • Understand how to simulate care plans, modify adherence parameters, and analyze journey outcomes.

  3. Simulating Patient Journeys:

    • Create baseline scenarios for a given patient and their care plan.

    • Adjust parameters such as adherence levels, treatment effectiveness, and occurrence of adverse events to create different journey combinations.

  4. Evaluating Journey Outcomes:

    • Measure the impact of adherence and treatment changes on clinical outcomes, including improvements, deteriorations, or plateauing of patient health.

    • Identify trends and key factors influencing successful care plans.

  5. Reporting and Insights:

    • Summarize the results of the simulated journeys.

    • Provide actionable recommendations for improving patient engagement and care plan success.

Lab Workflow

  1. Setup:

    • TBD

  2. Simulate Baseline Journey:

    • Understand baseline for the patient based on therapy guidelines.

  3. Explore Adherence Scenarios:

    • Modify medication adherence levels (e.g., 1 - 7, 1 being least adherent and 7 being best) and observe the effects on the patient’s journey.

    • Note the impact of reduced adherence on clinical outcomes and engagement.

  4. Assess Treatment Effectiveness:

    • Adjust treatment effectiveness rates (e.g., 1 - 7, 1 being no response to 7 being full effectiveness) and observe how they alter the journey outcomes.

    • Analyze how ineffective treatments affect engagement and overall care plans.

  5. Create Journey Combinations:

    • Combine different levels of adherence, adverse events, and treatment effectiveness to create diverse journey scenarios.

    • Evaluate the outcomes and identify key determinants of success.

  6. Reporting and Recommendations:

    • Summarize findings from different journey combinations.

    • Provide insights into how care plans can be optimized to improve adherence, manage adverse events, and maximize treatment effectiveness.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lab, students will be able to:

  1. Understand Key Components of the Patient Journey:

    • Explain the roles of medication adherence, adverse event reporting, and treatment effectiveness in shaping patient engagement and outcomes.

  2. Simulate Patient Journeys:

    • Use the CareAssist Playground to create and evaluate patient journey scenarios.

    • Explore the dynamic interplay between care plan factors and journey outcomes.

  3. Analyze the Impact of Adherence:

    • Quantify how varying levels of medication adherence affect clinical outcomes and patient engagement.

    • Understand the barriers to adherence and strategies to address them.

  4. Evaluate Adverse Events:

    • Simulate the occurrence of adverse events and analyze their impact on care plans.

    • Explore approaches to mitigate adverse events and maintain patient engagement.

  5. Assess Treatment Effectiveness:

    • Analyze how treatment effectiveness influences patient outcomes and journey success.

    • Identify strategies for managing cases of partial or ineffective treatments.

  6. Draw Actionable Insights:

    • Synthesize findings from various journey combinations to recommend improvements in care plans.

    • Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills in evaluating complex healthcare scenarios.

  7. Appreciate the Complexity of Patient Engagement:

    • Recognize the multifaceted nature of patient journeys and the need for personalized care approaches.

Outcome

This lab equips students with the knowledge and skills to simulate, evaluate, and optimize patient journeys in a clinical care context. By understanding how adherence, adverse events, and treatment effectiveness influence outcomes, students will be better prepared to design and manage patient-centered care plans in real-world healthcare settings.
